Character Information Name: Kara Thrace aka Starbuck Fandom: Battlestar Galactica PB: Katee Sackhoff journal: Will make if accepted. Don’t want too many random journals flying around ;) age: 33 powers: one hell of a Viper pilot allegiance: good
Relationships: separated from Sam Anders, in love with Lee Adama, like a daughter to William Adama Friendships: Lee Adama, Karl “Helo” Agathon, Sharon “Athena” Agathon Sexuality: straight Strengths: flying skills, ability to think out of the box when it comes to mission planning, loyalty, boxing (fighting) Weaknesses: stubborn, doesn’t back down from a fight, self-loathing (to the point of not wanting to be loved or cared for because she doesn’t think she deserves it), reckless, smartass mouth Habits/Quirks: gambling and drinking after a long day (same goes for heading off to the weight room), speaking aloud to herself or the gods, drawing/painting, writing poetry Personality: Kara is a Viper pilot through and through, and is happiest when she is in the cockpit (even happier if she is getting to pull a stunt or doing something reckless). She’s the best pilot the fleet’s got, and she knows it; it’s not ego, it’s fact. And while she’s good at her job, her smartass mouth and her habit of getting into fights have kept her from being promoted. In fact, the brig has become like a second home to her; she’s thinking of redecorating.
All that bluster and bravado aside, Kara is a wounded person. She’s endured countless traumatizing events, ranging from her mother’s beatings as a child to the months she was held captive by Leoben. She sees herself as damaged goods, as unworthy of being loved. Bad things happen to her and pain is a huge part of life. She’s accepted that. What was your character doing before they arrived on the island? [[Kara is entering the rp at the end of the episode “Maelstrom” (Season 3), just as she is saying good-bye to Lee.]]
The daughter of Socrata Thrace, Kara grew up beaten and broken, her mother believing that suffering was good for the soul and that she was preparing her daughter for her destiny. After a knee injury screwed up her plans of being a professional pyramid player, Kara found solace in flying. She quickly became an officer of the fleet and that was how she met a young recruit named Zak Adama. Falling in love with him, she stated that he passed his Basic Flight exam, despite the fact that he failed it. This led to his death and her resignation from teaching at the flight school.
Kara eventually became a pilot aboard the ship of William Adama, Zak’s father, called the Galactica. It was here that she faced the news that the colonies had been attacked by the Cylons. Adama, recognizing the need for more Viper pilots, asked Kara to train them. This brought back memories of Zak and led to her telling Adam the truth about Zak’s death and the part she played in it.
As the war with the Cylons raged on, Kara continued to be her smartass, risk-taking self. She planned crazy missions and even retrieved the Arrow of Apollo for President Roslin. She also seemingly fell in love with Samuel Anders, a pyramid player turned resistance fighter, though he seemed to be a substitute for the person she was afraid to really love: Lee Adama.
However, after having been held captive by Leoben for four months on New Caprica, Kara came back to Galactica a changed woman. She was bitter and mean, striking out at those who loved her. And while Adama managed to snap her out of it, she pushed away from Anders and everyone else. However, after a boxing match brought back a night they spent together on New Caprica, Kara felt herself gravitating towards Lee. Secret trysts occurred, but she wasn’t willing to divorce Anders and Lee didn’t want to keep cheating on Dee. Both seemed to take a step back and focus on other things.
Kara focused on the fact that a mandala had been discovered at the Temple of Five, and that she had been drawing that same mandala since she was a child. Her ability to fly was compromised by the fact that she was seeing Cylon raiders when no one else could. Feeling uneasy, she was thinking of taking time off from flying. But Lee convinced her to get back in the cockpit, offering to fly alongside her. She saw the “invisible” raider again and followed it, her Viper getting damaged. It was then she spoke to “Leoben” and her mother in a hallucination, recognizing her fear of dying. She said good-bye to Lee as she descended into clouds of gas, appearing to explode in front of his eyes.
Writing Example: Kara hit the punching bag with everything she had, ignoring the slight bursts of pain that were coming from her still-healing lower abdomen. She slammed her fists into the punching bag again and again and again, until shortness of breath forced her to stop. She rested her head against the bag and breathed heavily. Angrily blinking away the tears coming to her eyes, she once again thanked the gods that no one else was in the weight room.
It just wouldn’t go away, wouldn’t stop. Every time she blinked, she saw Sue-Shaun’s face, heard her voice in her head.
No. No time. Cut the power.
Kara lifted her head back, her fist crashing into the bag.
Can’t live like this. The baby machines. Please. Please.
She pounded the bag again.
It could’ve been her. She could’ve been like Sue-Shaun or any of the other women in that room. Hooked up to those machines, lying there helpless and vulnerable. Being raped just so a bunch of machines could have their children. Just so they could follow the commandments of their God.
Kara ran in place, her gloves smashing into the bag at the same rate her legs were moving.
No. No time. Can’t live like this. The baby machines. Cut the power. Please. Please. Cut the power. Please. Please. Can’t live like this…
“Aghhhhhhh!!!” Kara screamed as she backed away from the bag, her back up against the wall.
She had to go back. Yeah, she had promised to go back for Sam, and she was going to keep that promise. But it was more than that. She had to go back for the rest of the women in those farms. She had to go back for all of the people the Cylons had frakked over. Or she would never be able to stop. Never be able to sleep. Because she would continue to see them every time she closed her eyes.
